Most of our clients have said things that indicate their reason for using pre-employment tests was to make sure they didn’t hire any really bad employees. Although this is a very good reason, there are actually a couple more reasons.
Mediocre employees are the worst hires.
Why?
Because if you fill your organization with these types of employees, your organization will become mediocre and flat line. If you’re like most employers, you will probably never fire them because you won’t have a compelling reason. On the other hand, a bad employee will cause problems for a while until everyone sees the obvious and the person will eventually leave, be fired, or laid off.
Custom Benchmarking
Some of our existing clients have improved on this by building a profile of top performers and mediocre and poor performers. They have done this through reviewing the testing of those they have already hired or testing existing employees. In this way, when you go to hire someone you will have a better idea of what a true top performer looks like for your company. If you are an existing client you may have already done this, but if you haven’t, let me know if you are interested in doing this and we can start by looking at those you have already tested and hired to build a profile at no cost to you but a few minutes (literally) of your time.
Identify What’s Working and Not
Another good reason for testing is to help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of those already working for you. You will know how to better place them in your organization, what they need coaching on and what to expect under certain circumstances. The ability tests will point out specific blind spots that could beneficially be addressed after hiring. Contact us for more information on how to do this if it is not obvious. Even top performers can do better.
